How to play Number Fill-In
Play Number Fill-In
The rules
- The grid is shaped like a crossword. Every row or column of 3 or more white cells is a place for one number.
- The list under the grid has one number for every place, grouped by the number of digits. One number starts in the grid.
- Put every number into a place with the same number of cells as it has digits. Where two numbers cross, they must share the digit.
- Numbers always read from left to right and from top to bottom.
- The puzzle is solved when every place holds a number and no crossing clashes.
How to play here
- Drag a number from the list onto a place in the grid, or tap the number and then the place.
- A placed number is crossed out in the list. Drag or tap it again to move it to another place.
- Tap a digit in the grid to take its number out. Where two numbers cross, the number across comes out first.
- Keyboard: Tab to a number, Enter to pick it, the arrows to choose a place, Enter to drop it, Escape to cancel. In the grid, Delete takes a number out.
- Undo takes back the last move.

Tips
- Start with a length that has only one number left: it can go in only one place.
- Then look at places that already have digits from crossing numbers. Often only one number fits.
- On the harder levels, try a number in a place and look at the numbers that cross it. If one of them then has no number that fits, the first number cannot go there.
FAQ
- Is there only one way to fill the grid?
- Yes. Every puzzle has exactly one answer, and you can always reach it by logic, without guessing.
- Why is one number already in the grid?
- It is your starting point. It is crossed out in the list and cannot be moved.
- Can I move a number after I place it?
- Yes. Drag it, or tap it in the list, onto another place with the same number of digits. Tap a digit in the grid to take its number out again.
- What do the marked cells mean?
- Two numbers that cross there show different digits. One of them is in the wrong place. A dashed frame marks an empty place that no number left in the list fits.
- Is there a new puzzle every day?
- Yes. A new Number Fill-In is published every day at each of the four levels: easy, medium, hard and expert. Earlier puzzles are in the archive.
- Do I need an account to play?
- No. You play right in your browser, with no sign-up and no cookies. Your progress is saved in your browser.
