How to play Letter Web
The rules
- The grid has 25 squares and holds 25 different letters. 9 letters are given: the corners, the middle of each edge and the centre.
- Put each of the 16 letters under the grid into an empty square. Each letter is used once.
- Every word in the list must then be traceable: each letter touches the next one, at a side or a corner.
How to play here
- Tap a square to select it, then tap a letter to put it there. The next empty square is selected for you. Tap a selected letter again to remove it.
- Drag a letter onto a square, from one square to another, or back under the grid.
- Keyboard: type a letter to place it, the arrows move, Backspace deletes.
- A word you can trace is crossed out in the list, and a line joins its letters.
- Undo takes back the last move, and a hint shows where to look.
Difficulty levels
| Level | Words in the list | What it takes |
|---|---|---|
| Easy | About 16 | A letter next to a given letter |
| Medium | About 13 | Also: the only letter that fits a square |
| Hard | About 11 | Also: a letter that must reach several neighbours |
| Expert | About 11 | Also: two letters that share the same two squares |
Tips
- Start with words that use given letters: their neighbours can only go in the squares around them.
- A letter that appears in many words has to touch many letters: it usually belongs near the middle.
- Look for a square that only one letter can still reach.
FAQ
- Can more than one answer work?
- No. Every puzzle is checked before you see it: only one way to place the letters lets you trace all the words.
- Which words are used?
- Common English words of 3 to 7 letters, with no letter twice in a word.
- Do diagonal moves count?
- Yes. Each letter of a word must touch the next one at a side or a corner.
- Is there a new puzzle every day?
- Yes. Each puzzle is built from the date, so every day brings a new Letter Web at each of the four levels: easy, medium, hard and expert. Earlier puzzles are in the archive.
- Do I need an account to play?
- No. You play right in your browser, with no sign-up and no cookies. Your progress is saved in your browser.
